ET Mensah To Be Given A State Burial In January 2024

The late E.T. Mensah, former Member of Parliament for the Ningo-Prampram constituency, will be honored with a state burial scheduled for January 5, 2024.

Kwabena Adey Coker, Chairman of the funeral planning committee, shared these details during a press conference on November 3, 2023, held at E.T. Mensah’s residence in Tema, Greater Accra Region.

The family, along with the government, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and other stakeholders, finalized the agreed-upon date for the funeral arrangements.

The schedule for the state burial includes:

– A wake keeping on January 4, 2024, at E.T. Mensah’s residence in Ningo-Prampram.
– On January 5, a public viewing will take place at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.
– A thanksgiving service in honor of E.T. Mensah will be held on January 7 in Accra, hosted by the Methodist Church, Ghana.

Chairman Adey Coker expressed gratitude for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to grant E.T. Mensah a state burial, recognizing the government’s consistent support during the planning process.

E.T. Mensah, who passed away at the age of 77 in South Africa on October 1, had a long-standing political career. He served as Minister for Education and was a Member of Parliament in Ghana from January 1997 to January 2017. Married with seven children, Mensah made notable contributions during his tenure, including his role as the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly during the PNDC military regime.

As a Member of Parliament, Mensah represented the Ningo-Prampram constituency for nearly a decade and held positions as both Minority Chief Whip and Majority Chief Whip in parliament.

Throughout his political journey, Mensah held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Youth and Sports under President Jerry Rawlings and Minister for Employment and Social Welfare under President John Atta Mills. His service extended to international representation as a member of the Pan-African Parliament.

Recognized for his dedication and service, E.T. Mensah was appointed as the representative of the Council of State for the Greater Accra Region on February 12, 2021. The state burial in January 2024 stands as a tribute to his impactful political legacy and commitment to public service.
