I Will Pay You Monthly Allowance - Mahama Tells Newly Elected Assembly Members

Former President John Mahama has stated that if the National Democratic Congress secures victory in the 2024 general elections, assembly members will receive government allowances.

Mahama, speaking to journalists in Bole after participating in the district assembly election on December 19, 2023, emphasized the substantial responsibilities of assembly members. He pledged that, if elected president, his government would provide allowances to assist assembly members in fulfilling their elected duties.

Furthermore, Mahama announced plans to increase the district assembly common fund from five percent to seven percent under his potential next government. Expressing a commitment to serious decentralization, he outlined intentions to address ministries and remaining centrally managed Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) if successful in the 2024 elections.

Highlighting the significance of completing the decentralization process, Mahama stressed the aim of truly transferring power to the people at the local government level. He asserted that effective decentralization is vital for Ghana’s progress and vowed to prioritize this goal.

In addition to the assembly members’ allowance, Mahama promised an increase in the district common fund disbursement from 5% to 7%, in line with the 2016 enforcement. He emphasized the importance of regular disbursement of the District Assemblies Common Fund to enable districts to leverage it for accelerated development.

Mahama concluded by urging those who hadn’t voted to go to the polling stations and select their assembly members.
