Ghana’s Raphael Dwamena Dies During Football Match In Albania

Raphael Dwamena, a former striker for the Black Stars, died on the field during Egnatia Rrogozhin’s match against Partizani Tirana. The Ghanaian attacker reportedly had a heart attack and passed out in the 23rd minute, as reported by Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio on X on November 11, 2023. The team’s medics hurried out to the field, but they weren’t able to save him. Since Dwamena experienced his first cardiac arrest in 2020, he has been using an implanted defibrillator while on the field.

In an OFB Cup match against TSV Hartberg in November 2021, he collapsed on the field for BW Linz and later died. Dwamena, who had been on the field, passed out in the 20th minute of the quarterfinal match against Hartberg in the OFB Cup. Due to his cardiac condition, the club waived him in 2022. In January, he transferred to KF Egnatia of Albania. A professional for nine years, he donned the jerseys of nine different teams, including the likes of Levante, Real Zaragoza, Red Bull Salzburg, and FC Zurich. Raphael Dwamena made his international debut with the Black Stars in 2017, but his career was cut short due to heart problems. In those nine games, he contributed two goals.
