Legon Students Receive Free Laptops

Some students of University of Ghana, Legon have received free laptops from the university. This was supervised by the Vice Chancellor, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.

The laptop distribution event took place at the Cedi Conference Centre on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, and was attended by various University of Ghana representatives.

During the event, VC Nana Aba shared insights about her Digitization Initiative, aimed at equipping students with essential technological skills.

She mentioned that this marked the third laptop distribution ceremony under the initiative, excluding an exclusive distribution event for graduate students.

Earlier in October, Vice Chancellor Nana Aba had informed the media that the university was making significant progress in establishing a computer assembly plant on campus. She expressed confidence that the initiative was well underway and expected to be fully operational within a year.

“We are in the process of setting up a laptop assembly plant right here on campus. We’ve selected companies, signed agreements, and anticipate breaking ground for the assembly plant soon,” she stated. “Though establishing the assembly plant will take time, we’ve taken steps towards this goal. I believe that within a year, we’ll transition to assembling laptops on-site.”

The ‘One Student One Laptop Initiative’ aims to leverage innovative methods by partnering with established Information Technology (IT) companies to provide students and staff with cost-effective or free laptops/handheld devices. This initiative is designed to bridge the digital gap and enhance the learning and teaching experience at the University of Ghana.
