State Slaps Nam 1 With New Charges After Withdrawing Previous Charges

Nana Appiah Mensah (Nam1) has been slapped with fresh charges by the state attorney after withdrawal all old charges against him.

This decision, explained by Director of Prosecution Yvonne Atakora, is due to amendments in the figures (amounts involved) of the case, made in the interest of justice.

The case’s next hearing is scheduled for December 4, 2023, allowing NAM1’s legal team time to review the new charges, as per their request for an adjournment, which was accepted by the state attorney. The presiding judge has also ordered enhanced security measures at the court entrance following an incident where NAM1’s Public Relations Officer was reportedly struck on the forehead after a previous hearing.

Amidst the packed courtroom and heightened security, disgruntled customers of Menzgold, seeking the release of their funds since the company’s suspension in 2018, continue to voice their grievances. Menzgold has been accused of operating a Ponzi scheme.

Nam 1 faces trial for allegedly defrauding more than 16,000 individuals of GH¢1.68 billion. Despite NAM1’s claim that he deposited GH¢5 million with the Ghana Police Service to benefit the company’s customers, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, refuted this in Parliament, stating that only GH¢2.5 million was received and subsequently deposited with the Bank of Ghana by the Ghana Police Service.
