Teaching Continues In Some Schools In Volta Region After Dam Spillage

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has informed the media that teaching and learning have resumed in 81 out of 108 schools affected by the recent Akosombo Dam spillage in nine districts.

Dr. Eric Nkansah emphasized ongoing efforts to restore activities in the remaining 27 schools within the North Tongu District, mainly used as camps and safe havens for displaced households. The objective is to ensure all flood-affected schools resume teaching promptly.

This update follows a three-day visit by key GES officials to evaluate the Education in Emergency Plan initiated after the spillage. The Director-General expressed gratitude for collaborative efforts and commended various stakeholders, including government officials, traditional authorities, and development partners.

The spillage, part of routine dam exercises by the Volta River Authority, resulted in widespread flooding, displacing communities and triggering the implementation of emergency education measures. Relief efforts, including donations of temporary classrooms and educational materials, have been supported by UNICEF and other partners.

The Director-General, during his visit, met with stakeholders in affected areas, discussing progress and identifying areas for further action in implementing the GES Education in Emergency Plan.
